Playing With Proportions
MABEL FOX’S 5 STEP GUIDE TO LARGE SPACE’S
Designing a room with larger dimensions can be challenging, as the vastness of the space can often make it difficult to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere. However, with the right design concept and strategies, you can transform a large room into a welcoming and functional space. In this blog post, we will discuss some tips and tricks for designing a room with larger dimensions.
1. Use Scale and Proportion
When selecting furniture and decor for a large room, it's important to consider scale and proportion. Large furniture pieces will help to fill the space and make it feel more inviting, while smaller pieces can get lost in the vastness of the room. You should also consider the height of the ceilings when selecting furniture and decor. Taller pieces can help to draw the eye upward and make the room feel more balanced. If the room is particularly long but narrow, make sure the furniture positioning reflects this. The longest side of the large pieces of furniture should run adjacent to the length of the room where possible.
2. Create Zones
When dealing with a large room, creating zones within the space can help to make the room feel established and significant. Sometimes these zones are obvious; if you have a large, open plan living area, it may need to include a dining space, kitchen area, living space and study, therefore these are your 4 zones. However sometimes zone planning is not so obvious, in particular for rooms that have only one purpose of function. For these large rooms consider creating regions in the room for each activity that is likely to occur within the space. For example in a large living area, the main focus of the room will be a seating to watch tv and socialize, however there could also be a separate reading corner (reading lamp, armchair, bookshelf) a separate section for when hosting (games table, drinks cabinet, games storage) or perhaps this is wear you would keep your sound system (speakers, interface, record player, album storage). Incorporating zones into your space will not only make the room feel more organized but will also allow you to use the space more efficiently.
3. Add Texture
When not designed to their full potential, large rooms will often have an eco, making the space feel industrial and cold rather than warm and homely. The best way to remove this eco is to add in textures that absorb some of the sound. Some of our favorite ways to add texture to a room are;
-Add a large area rug
-Pick out some padded furniture covered in soft fabrics (e.g. sofa, ottoman, armchair, bed frame covered in cotton, velvet, boucle, brushed cotton, linen, microfiber, wool avoid leather & polyester)
-Purchase cohesive soft furnishings (such as cushions, blankets & beddings)
These will not only help to reduce the eco in the room but also create a cozy and welcoming atmosphere.
4. Use Colour
Colour can be a powerful tool when designing a large room. Using deep, rich and warm colours can help to make the space feel more intimate and inviting, while cooler, lighter colours can make the space feel more open and airy. High ceilings are often considered more luxurious and make the room feel more open and grand, however there are some rooms in a home that we would prefer to feel less open and more cosy, for example a living room or snug. Another hack we use at mabel fox when designing cosy spaces with high ceilings is to paint a beautiful rich wall colour up to typical residential ceiling height (around 2200mm), leaving the rest of the wall matching the white ceiling. This gives the illusion of the ceiling being lower down making the room feel warmer and more snug.
5. Lighting
Lighting is essential in any room, but it's particularly important in a large spaces. You want to make sure that the space is well-lit and that there is a variety of lighting sources to create different moods. Consider using a mix of overhead lighting, table lamps, and floor lamps to create a layered lighting scheme. Also make sure to avoid using bright white LED lighting as this can be cool and harsh and instead use warm white LED light bulbs to light the space.
