Renovation with Intention: An Interior Designer’s Guide to a Home That Feels Like You
Renovating your home is such an exciting step, but let’s be honest, it can also feel a little overwhelming. Where do you even begin? What should you prioritise? And how do you make sure it still feels like you when it’s all finished? As interior designers, we like to think of renovating as part storytelling, part problem-solving. It’s not just about what looks good, it’s about creating a space that supports your day-to-day life and feels like home the moment you walk through the door.
So if you’re ready to roll up your sleeves and breathe new life into your space, here are a few helpful things to keep in mind.
1. Work With What You’ve Got
Before you make any big decisions, take a step back and look at the bones of your home. What features do you love? What’s worth highlighting or preserving?
Maybe it’s original floorboards, a sweet little bay window, or even just the natural light that pours in at certain times of day. These are the kinds of things that give your home character, and working with them (instead of fighting them) tends to lead to more timeless, thoughtful results.
2. Let Lighting Lead the Way
Lighting isn’t just functional, it’s foundational. Think about how natural light moves through your space and how you can enhance it. Consider adding skylights, larger windows, or glass doors to invite more daylight. It’s super handy to plan your lighting scheme early, incorporating a mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting to create layers and mood.

3. Layer in Texture (It’s the Secret Ingredient)
One of the easiest ways to make your space feel warm and lived-in is by layering texture. You’d be surprised how much difference it makes. Think natural timber, soft linens, woven rugs, brushed metals, warm ceramics. You don’t need to go overboard, just mixing a few materials and finishes can add depth and that "I saw this in a magazine" vibe without it feeling too done.
4. Be Kind to the Planet (and Your Future Self)
If you’re renovating, it’s a great time to think about how your home can be more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. That might look like upgrading your insulation, choosing sustainably sourced materials, or using secondhand furniture instead of buying everything new. Not only is it kinder on the planet, but it often ends up being better for your wallet in the long run too.
5. Think About the You of Tomorrow
Renovating isn’t just about how you live now, it’s also about future-proofing your space. Will that spare room become a home office one day? Could that bathroom layout still work if your needs change down the line? Designing with flexibility in mind is a smart move, even if it’s something as simple as adding extra storage or making doorways a little wider.
6. Budget Honestly (and Leave Some Wiggle Room)
Ah yes, the budget. No one’s favourite topic, but an important one! Be realistic about what you can spend, and always keep a bit aside (around 15–20%) for the unexpected. Because in renovations, there's always something unexpected. That said, there are plenty of ways to get creative. Mix high and low, reuse where you can, and prioritise the things that really matter to you. A statement light fixture or beautiful splashback tile can go a long way.
7. Make It Yours
Don’t get too caught up in trends. This is your home, and it should feel like you. Love colour? Go for it. Obsessed with vintage furniture? Lean into that. Your space should tell your story and feel welcoming to you, first and foremost. Some of the most memorable homes are the ones that feel collected, not decorated.
8. Use Colour (and Pattern!) with Confidence
There’s no need to play it safe unless that’s your style. Colour and pattern can bring so much life to a room, whether that’s a soft sage green on the walls or a bold, patterned tile in the bathroom. If you’re not sure where to start, try the 70/20/10 rule: 70% neutral or base colour, 20% supporting tone, and 10% for a pop or accent. It keeps things feeling balanced, but still interesting.
9. Create Flow Between Rooms
Even if you love to mix styles, try to create a sense of connection from room to room. That might be through a shared colour palette, flooring, or repeated materials and textures. It doesn’t have to be matchy-matchy, but a little continuity goes a long way in making your home feel calm, cohesive, and considered.
